About This Archive
What Stonewellhome documents, where the information comes from, and how editorial decisions are made.
Scope
Stonewellhome covers three interlocking areas of Italian vernacular and monumental masonry: dry-stone construction (predominantly the Ligurian terrace tradition), traditional lime mortar formulation and restoration application, and the geological history of Florentine building stones – principally Pietra Serena and Pietraforte.
The archive does not cover contemporary concrete construction, decorative tile, or interior finishing. It is limited to load-bearing and retaining stonework built before 1950, with emphasis on pre-industrial methods.
Sources and Methodology
Each article is built from a defined set of primary and secondary sources:
- Peer-reviewed geology and materials science journals (Springer, MDPI, CNR IRIS)
- UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage documentation (2018 inscription of dry-stone walling)
- ICOMOS technical documents on lime mortar and stone consolidation
- Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage (MiC) restoration guidelines
- Published quarrying histories for Fiesole, Settignano, and Gonfolina
Where figures are cited (proportions, dimensions, dates), they are drawn from the source material directly. No figures are estimated or paraphrased beyond what the cited source states.
Editorial Approach
Articles are written in a descriptive register without commercial framing. No products, contractors, or restoration firms are recommended. The archive records how methods worked and what materials were used – practical application requires consultation with a licensed professional familiar with local regulations and the specific condition of the structure.
Content is reviewed when updated research becomes available. The last review date is noted at the foot of each article.
Expertise
The editorial team has backgrounds in architectural conservation history and geological documentation. Contributors hold postgraduate qualifications in conservation science from Italian universities. All claims are sourced; no unsourced assertions are published.
Contact and Corrections
Corrections from practitioners, academics, or field researchers are taken seriously. If a figure, date, or technical description is incorrect, contact the archive at info@stonewellhome.eu with the source you are citing. Verified corrections are applied and noted in the article's revision history.
